Colleyville History
|
Colleyville has historically been primarily a rural area located somewhere between Big Bear and Little Bear Creek in the Eastern Cross Timbers in northeastern Tarrant County.
The first significant settlement in the area began during the 1850's. Samuel C.H. Witten moved to Texas from Missouri in 1854 to start a farm along Little Bear Creek. Witten was one of the founders of the Spring Garden community, which flourished in the 1860's around a well-known school, finally declining in the 1870's as Bedford continued to grow. Other settlers kept coming, such as Johathan A. Riley, from Kentucky who settled near Spring Garden and Kentucky-born Civil War veteran Ryan Harrington, who bought land near Pleasant Glade in 1865; and William B Cheek from Kentucky, who came to northeast Tarrant County in 1869, eventually settling near Ryan Harrington's property. As settlers moved into the Colleyville area during this time, small communities sprang up, usually centered around a church, school or lodge. Still other farmers kept on coming in throughout the 19th century. The Colleyville area was still five separate communities. William Dunn settled property between Big Bear Creek and Bransford in 1875, In the 1880's, Lilburn Howard Colley and his wife settled on 7.5 acres located near the intersection of Shelton Drive and Bransford Road, the James R. Forbes family, of Bedford County, Tennessee, started a farm in 1887; and Anthelm Bidault from France started cultivating his renowned orchards and vineyards near Pleasant Run in 1897.
